The Spring 2003 installment of the ArtPace International Artists-in-Residence (IAIR) Program opens Thursday, March 13, with a reception from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Current residents Brian Fridge, Paul Pfeiffer, and Susan Philipsz were selected by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Chief Curator of the Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Italy. On Friday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m., Christov-Bakargiev will moderate an artists' dialogue, during which the public is invited to ask questions about the work on display and the art makers.
In conjunction with his ArtPace residency, Fort Worth-based video artist Brian Fridge will screen additional new work at the Tia Room, an impromptu salon located in the other half of the Sala Diaz duplex. During his reception on Friday, March 14 from 10 p.m. to midnight, take a peek next door at Sala Diaz proper, where you'll find Terri Thornton and Jeff McMillan's collaboration, "Semi-detached," a painting and installation hybrid. Fort Worth's Thornton and London-based, San Antonio ex-pat McMillan are the fifth pair of artists to participate in the gallery's Duplex Series, conceived by artist/curator Hills Snyder. According to Snyder, the series relies heavily on the laws of chance, inspired by the fortuitous discovery of a copy of The Joy of Cooking on the street with a mysterious note card inside reading "easy does it." The curator acts as agent provocateur: He chooses two artists he feels are compatible and simply steps back and lets the creative soup simmer.
Also on Friday, March 14, the Renaissance Guild of San Antonio's New Black Theater Company, in conjunction with Star Productions, begins a run of Barbara Lebow's play, The Left Hand Singing, at San Antonio College. The play, set in the Freedom Summer of 1964, deals with the emotionally charged issue of the disappearance of three idealistic student activists that fateful summer. Singing runs through March 30 at SAC's McCreless Theater, with discounted rates for the Thursday and Sunday performances. Call 732-9041 for details.
On Wednesday, March 19, ArtPace will hold a brown bag lunch in honor of Jim Hodges. His series, entitled "Returning," is currently on view in ArtPace's Hudson Showroom.
