a week on the scene

Ready for a rousing game of bingo? Wanna win some snazzy prizes? The El Orbits, a Houston-based lounge/cover band, will perform at Taco Land on Tuesday, May 20.

The band has rocked for (or, if not exactly rocked, then at least "strolled") audiences from stages as diverse as the Astrodome

and the Astrodome Radisson. It is the band's philosophy that they should make their money doing weddings and private gigs on the weekend, so that they can play for tips from young bingo addicts and lounge lovers during the week. On those terms, they make a living. "This is a cover band. We have a couple of original songs, but we don't even play 'em," says drummer and bandleader David Beebe. Check 'em out at

Musicians Eva Ybarra and the late Oscar Tellez were inducted into the Conjunto Hall of Fame during the opening night of the 22nd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival last week. Ybarra is known as "La Reina del Acordeón," the queen of the accordion; in 1994, she recorded the hit single, "A Mi San Antonio." Tellez is considered one of the best bajo sexto players in the world, and has performed and recorded with the Texas Tornados, Flaco Jimenez, and Mingo Saldivar y sus Tremendos Cuatro Espadas.

The two artists join such music luminaries as Narciso Martinez, Valerio Longoria, Santiago Jimenez Sr., Tony de la Rosa, Lydia Mendoza, Antonio Tanguma Guajardo, Esteban Jordan, Manuel Guerrero, and Saldivar in the Hall of Fame.

"PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take ALTER EGO off your EVERY Tuesday listing in the calender for Mark's on the River Walk. Why the hell can't you put in the RIGHT stuff I send you people, which I do by your deadlines? We did Mark's just twice ... Please see that this is remedied immediately, because I am getting tired of seeing this listing ... the WRONG one ... and not the CORRECT one I send each week!" Signed, Steve Elliott, Alter Ego

The band will not play at Mark's on Tuesday night. •
