Hope everyone enjoyed the music at Blue Star last First Friday. According to rumor, hearsay, and all other forms of social misconduct that make the art world SO MUCH FUN, the owner of Blue Star has said ix-nay on the outdoor music - for good. Noise has always been a problem at the sprawling complex - people actually do live there, you know - but it seems that this decision has a much less noble impetus than accommodating long-term residents. The live music competes with Blue Star's new mission to provide art lovers with the best sports coverage money can buy. The complex's owner is reportedly fitting the exterior of Blue Star's main building with a huge video screen to show SPURS GAMES on FIRST FRIDAYS. Good move. I'm sure there is a grant for that.
On a much less ridiculous note, the ballots are in - San Antonio Underground Film Festival ballots, that is. This year's grand prize winner of the SAUFF - and more importantly, winner of the much coveted lowrider bicycle - is… Juan Carlos Garza. His 84-minute feature, "Never Trust a Serial Killer," screens at the Alameda on Saturday, June 21. Timothy Gorski's "Lolita - Slave to Entertainment" took second place, and Byron Livernois' "Harrison Macauley is Going to Kill Me" won third.
Now in its ninth year, the little festival that could is experiencing a growth spurt - Festival director Adam Rocha reports over 140 entries. He has also added a panel contingent. Discussion of this year's topic - independent funding - will be moderated by KLRN's Dagoberto Patlan. Screenings will run 12 hours a day, from Friday, June 20 through Sunday, June 22.
