Growing Exponentially

Exponential, the excellent hip-hop and electronic music label fronted by local DJ/producer Ernest Gonzales, is well on its way to building a considerable catalog. In 2002, Exponential released DJ Jester's mix-session disc Heavily Booted, and it followed with the debut mix CD from Klassen, Polaroid.

Gonzalez, working under the nom-de-beat of Theory of Everything, has also used the label as an outlet for his own adventures in digital recording. On Wednesday, June 30, Exponential will host a party at Cafe Revolucion (527 El Paso) with music provided by Gonzales, Klassen, Clusaki, Aether, and DJ LowRes. At the party, the label will also give away copies of a new mix CD assembled by Gonzales.

Gonzales formed Exponential in 2000 after completing a stint in art school. He went on to join forces with Jester, Klassen, Donnie D, Scuba Steve and Gibb in the DJ mega-collective, Supa Brotha Scientists. He's currently juggling his work on the next Theory of Everything disc with plans for a crunk record and a collaboration with Realismo Magico.

Blues Doc

SA blues aficionados will want to catch the screening of Antone's: Home of the Blues, director Dan Karlock's documentary about the legendary Austin roots-music mecca, at this week's San Antonio Underground Film Festival.

Behind the impassioned guidance of blues fanatic Clifford Antone, Antone's long ago established itself as the finest blues venue west of the Mississippi, and fostered the careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lou Ann Barton, Marcia Ball, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and a host of other regional giants. The club's importance in the history of Texas music is so considerable that we can almost forgive their booking of Gina Gershon last year during her Prey for Rock 'n' Roll tour.

The film, which debuted in March at South By Southwest, includes interviews with the likes of Antone, Jimmie Vaughan, Willie Nelson, and Kim Wilson. It's a continuation of Karlock's cinematic preoccupation with Lone Star music, following Ride With Bob, his feature-length doc about Asleep At the Wheel. Antone's: Home of the Blues will be shown at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 25, at Sunset Station's Studio 794.
