Build Me Up Buttercup

Buttercup has a new DVD out, and to commemorate its release, the iconoclastic quartet will recreate the gig documented on the 35-minute disc: an October, 2003 collaboration with artist Robert Tatum in which they performed in one room while their video images were projected on oil drums to an audience in a separate room. The recreation will be part of Contemporary Art Month, and will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, at the Finesilver Building (816 Cameron). On July 5, the group celebrates the release of the DVD, titled Goodbye Blue Monday, at their weekly gRacKle mUndY show at the Wiggle Room (2301 S. Presa). The disc sells for $15.

Goth Sanctuary

Goth and industrial haven Communion has changed its name to Sanctuary (a move brought on by what reps describe as a "few shifts in upper management") and will usher in its new era on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3. The club's Saturday '80s retro night this weekend will bask in the glory of the Cure's comeback by offering attendees a chance to win tickets to catch the Curiosa Tour (featuring the Cure, Interpol, Mogwai, among others) in Houston on August 14. In recent months, Communion, which separates its live-music room from its dance club, has moved to enhance its reputation as a live venue. The club hired former Sin 13 talent booker Angel Castorena in January, and over the intervening months has brought in bands such as Yellowcard, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Sparta.

Desde la Frontera

The El Paso-based band Fuga rolls into town this week for an eagerly-anticipated follow-up to their San Antonio debut last winter. This melodic sextet's tales of life en la frontera captivate and communicate both the beauty and hardship of the present-day Chicano and Mexicano reality along both sides of the border. If their forthcoming release is any indication, expect a tighter sounding, inspiring (and awe-inspiring) performance from this vallenato-infused, rock-ska hybrid when they take the stage at the JumpStart Theater (108 Blue Star) on Thursday, July 1 at 8 p.m. Also look for special guests Jesse Borrego y los Muertos. Presale tickets are available at Hogwild and the Jumpstart box office for this red, white and green event.
