The low-down on this week's premieres
"Have you seen my baseball?" as a slow-witted Warren so adamantly asks in There's Something About Mary, is the perfect plug for the new comedy Fever Pitch by the Farrelly brothers, the deranged filmmaking duo that brought moviegoers a urine-drinking cop in Dumb and Dumber, Jim Carrey (Liar, Liar) breastfeeding like an infant on a woman in Me, Myself and Irene, and a pair of conjoined twins having a slug fest in Stuck on You. Yes, the same guys that somehow made a blonde bombshell like Gwyneth Paltrow look so unappealing in Shallow Hal. Sick minds do think alike.
In Fever Pitch, Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore) falls for a guy who seems to be the man of her dreams, Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon). Although Ben is completely faithful to Lindsey, he does have another love in his life that she doesn't know about: He is obsessed with the Boston Red Sox.
If appalling humor isn't your style, here is a footnote. Like their 1996 film Kingpin, the Farrellys only direct Pitch, they're not credited as screenwriters. Wait. Isn't Kingpin the one where ... ew ... nevermind.
Actors Matthew McConaughey (Reign of Fire), Steve Zahn (Daddy Day Care), and Penelope Cruz (Gothika) go on an adventure in West Africa to search for a lost Civil War vessel known as "The Ship of Death" in Sahara. They must also figure out the cause of an outbreak that is affecting many of the African natives. If they plan on surviving in the desert, they'd better take a suntan lotion of at least SPF 45.
Two-time Academy Award-winning director/writer Woody Allen gets repetitious with Melinda & Melinda. `See review, in this issue of the Current` The film stars Radha Mitchell (Finding Neverland) as the title character, who goes through two separate stories, one comic and one tragic. With Allen at the helm, is there any difference?
