Cannon fodder
Just a week after the "Video Trapped the Rapper" tour invaded Sanctuary, a more home-grown, underground hip-hop extravaganza will follow suit. The "Cannonball Jones Tour" (possibly an homage to sax great Cannonball Adderley and his bass player Sam Jones?) features four Texas titans - two MCs and two DJs - on a brief Lone Star excursion that will include stops in Austin, Houston, and San Marcos.
A prime mover for the tour is Ernest Gonzales, better known as Theory of Everything, a 21st century Renaissance man who's a graphic artist, school teacher, sonically adventurous turntablist, and the founder of a record label (Exponential). He'll be joined by Notes, a defiantly old-school hip-hop MC; DJ Tech-neek, a member of the artsy Prhymemates collective; and Rethuglikan, a Republican thug MC who'll drop his supply-side science faster than you can say "Drop the hammer on Tom DeLay." The "Cannonball Jones Tour" comes to Sanctuary (1818 N. Main) on Saturday, April 16. It's an all-ages show, and cover is $5.
In further Gonzales news, the DJ also recently co-launched "Speaker," a bi-weekly communal night of music and poetry on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 7-11 p.m. The headquarters for "Speaker" is Blend, site of the old Wong Grocery Store, at 1502 S. Flores.
Mariachi mania
Fresh off their victorious performance at Houston's Go Tejano Mariachi Competition last month the ladies of Mariachi Las Alteñas join Campanas de America and Mariachi Nueva Era for the 2005 Mariachi Fiesta Kickoff, from 7 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, April 14 at the Cadillac Bar (212 S. Flores). Along with the musica and comida, one lucky participant will win a serenata from Las Alteñas. For more information contact 875-0666.
