The low-down on this weeks premieres
Based on the 1952 short story by Ray Bradbury (author of Fahrenheit 451), A Sound of Thunder combines time travel with the chaos theory and the butterfly effect, a phrase coined by American mathematician and meteorologist Edward Norton Lorenz 11 years after the Bradbury novella was published. Travis Ryer (Edward Burns) enters a time machine owned by Charles Hatton (Ben Kingsley) and travels back to the prehistoric age to hunt dinosaurs, but the future begins to change when he kills a butterfly during his voyage. Speaking of insects, Junebug is scheduled to open exclusively at Regal Fiesta 16 `see "Buyer beware" in this issue of the Current`. The film follows Chicago art dealer Madeline (Embeth Davidtz) on a journey to meet her husband Georges (Alessandro Nivola) family in North Carolina. Actress Amy Adams (Catch Me If You Can), who plays Georges sister-in-law Ashley, won the Special Jury Prize at this years Sundance Film Festival for her performance.
November is a dark but rewarding tale of a woman who cant escape the memory of her boyfriends murder during a convenience-store robbery. Mysterious photos from the night of the event begin to surface, deepening the tension of this Memento-meets-Jacobs Ladder enigma.
For cinephiles cursed with a short attention span and a thirst for the avant-garde, Beavis and Butt-Head creator Mike Judge has curated The Animation Show, featuring animated shorts new and classic from more than eight countries, plus three new creations by co-collaborator Don Hertzfeldt.
If youve seen those movie trailers that look like Audi commercials with fight scenes, then you know all about The Transporter 2. Actor Jason Statham (Cellular) reprises his role as Frank Martin, an ex-Special Forces operative whose speciality is, well, transporting stuff.
Finally, with school just getting underway, Underclassman beware. Nick Cannon (Drumline) plays an undercover cop who is trying to find a killer at an elite private school.
