Yule gatherings
It’s beginning to look a lot like Ken Slavin around these parts. San Antonio’s favorite jazz crooner will be tunefully roasting some holiday chestnuts on an open fire when he and his band make their annual visit to KTSA-AM 550 on Tuesday, December 13, at 7 p.m. for a set of seasonal favorites. Call 599-5555 to make requests. On December 17, Slavin keeps this festive spirit alive with his “Yule Be Swingin’” holiday concert at the Venue (800 Lexington) from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
The wildly eclectic Latino internationalists of Bombasta will play their official Christmas show when they invade Salute on Saturday, December 10. Expect some special guests and the stellar turntable work of Electric Messiah.
They call him MR. DIBBS
Cincinnati, Ohio native Mr. Dibbs has been compared to turntable phenoms ranging from Dr. Dre to DJ Q-Bert to Mixmaster Quick. Known as much for his intimidating, tattooed presence and short temper as for his genre-mashing blends, the former bouncer gained underground notoriety as the touring DJ for indie darling Atmosphere.
Dibbs founded the hip-hop collective 1200 Hobos in the early ’90s, has released more than 33 mix-tapes, and served as the co-manager of Scribble Jam, Cincinnati’s annual celebration of hip-hop. More recently he has received attention for his unparalleled ability to fuse metal and hardcore with hip-hop soundscapes.
Dibbs visits San Antonio as part of “The Turntable Tantrum” scheduled for Friday, December 9, at the White Rabbit. Also on the bill are the Ground Opening Crew from Dallas, and SA’s own celebrated DJs Kico and Donnie D. The all-ages show opens at10 p.m. and the cover ranges from $7-10. Underground heads should also keep an ear out for “The Sweet Hip-Hop Tour,” featuring Notes, Mnolo, Walking Sticks, and DJ Mr. Lucky, which hits The Cove on December 13, Travis 151 on December 15, and the Lounge on Ave. B on December 16.
