ON THE COVER

The Baroque World of Fernando Botero, a nearly comprehensive survey of the Colombia-born contemporary artist's career, opens this week at SAMA and the Southwest School of Art & Craft. Unfortunately, writes Frank Hammel, Botero's most famously controversial paintings won't be seen, although the three-month schedule of events, collectively titled Botero: Beloved Artist of the Americas, does include a symposium on his Abu Ghraib series and other political works. On the cover: “Melancholy,” by Fernando Botero.

Jeremy Martin’s comic book review of Army@Love `Straight Shooter, May 9-15` hits our empire’s propaganda nail on its covert head. His insight into the realities of our military personnel (“disadvantaged teens or misguided patriots”) shows up Memorial Day/Veterans Day rhetoric for what it is: We make them victims and call them heroes.

Hardberger & Stonewall Dems - Littleton?

So Hardberger met with Stonewall Dems. Why didn’t they push him on saying that the Littleton decision (post-op transsexual with vagina remains legally male) he wrote was in error? He could easily tell his Repub frineds in Texas Lege to pass the current House Bill for name change that would, in effect, render the Littleton decision moot and no longer effective.

What’s to say?

The Mayor doesn’t have to “say” anything about the gay community per se. What’s there to say: that it exists? I laud Hardberger’s seamless integration of all communities into the larger, diverse community that is San Antonio.
