I know you all have been losing sleep worrying over whether or not an American-loving Albanian would actually steal President Bush's beloved Timex watch, but fear not. Last night NBC Nightly News revealed footage of Bush amidst a frenzied Albanian crowd from a previously unseen angle. The camera, located a few feet diagnally behind his left, shows him reaching his left arm across his body. Although you can't actually see him removing the watch, it is obvious that is what he is doing.
Since Bush's visit to Albania Sunday, there has been wide speculation of the disapearance of the watch on his left wrist during a greeting session with a hyper crowd. Videos of the President suddenly sans watch while making his way through the crowd spurred many theories of what happened. The Associated Press reported an Albanian body guard saying he saw someone in Bush's entourage pick it up after it fell off of his wrist. As the YouTube clips quickly circulated on the Internet, many speculated that the watch was stolen by someone in the crowd. There is even an Ebay listing for the popular timepiece.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, White House spokesman Tony Snow said the president had put the watch in his pocket and returned safely home. Forget that it's more than a little sad that Snow actually had to take up press time to address an occurence on the level of Paris Hilton's latest jailhouse break, some people continued to speculate it was all a dirty cover-up because the White House realizes Albania is one of the few countries that actually likes us. While the latter may be true, I am sorry to say that the watch mystery has been solved. Whatever will we do until we have another trivial matter of the rich and famous to speculate about?
