Amuse-BOUCHE

Café Gallo proprietor Jason Garcia – an alum of Le Rêve and Biga – would like to shake up some of your locally grown food assumptions: Coffee doesn’t have to be roasted within an inch of its life to be flavorful, e.g., and bolillos don’t have to be white. The new restaurant, located inside Gallista Gallery in the quietly booming SoSoFlo arts district, serves beans roasted to order by San Antonio’s Brown Coffee Co. and wheat buns procured from a Westside bakery willing to bake them. On the latter Garcia serves a thoughtful selection of sandwiches, from spicy tuna to pork achiote to a hearty-sounding veggie. Stop in for the Friday-morning breakfast special and you might luck into French toast topped with ginger-poached pears.

Café Gallo is open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, but Garcia plans to add Wednesday evenings early next spring, and for January’s Second Saturday, Garcia’s partner Sandra Torres is working up a film presentation with Slab Cinema’s Rick Martinez.

“We wanted to have more of an espresso bar and focus on coffee,” says Garcia, “but the food’s outselling the coffee at the moment.”
