“Save My Soul” — Ashlee Rose

A hip-shaking guitar groove precedes Rose’s voice, but typical for Texas country, the lyrics drive the song. “This holy water better save my soul,” Rose huskily demands, not out of desperation but skepticism, as if she suspects that God’s gonna welch on the deal. While Rose’s powerful voice, spread thick in many places via multi-tracked self-harmonizing, often overpowers the basic instrumental bounce, a couple of quick and neat guitar solos (Rose’s website says she’s been playing since age 10) save the song from becoming musically competent but indistinguishable karaoke, a rampant genre sin so heinous no amount of holy water (or whiskey for that matter) could wash it away.
