Hearts On .4. You

Release Date: 2008-12-10

“Can you believe we made it 20 years?!” enthuses Hank Lee. And, indeed, this month marks the two-score anniversary for San Angel Folk Art (110 Blue Star), San Anto’s home for traditional arts and one-of-a-kind works by outsider artists. Run by Lee, Leigh Anne Lester, and Paul Bonin Rodriguez, San Angel exhibits and advocates for many local self-taught masters, including the besieged and irrepressible Reverend Seymour Perkins. Hank wants especially to emphasize locals such as “saint-carvers” Cookie Moran and Alfredo Rodriguez, dynamic dioramist Sally Ozuna (above), the Victoria Courts media visionary Robert Streckfus, Sid St. Onge of Topo Chico recycled glasses (and Fear Snakeface) fame, and Dr. Allen, who lives under the Commerce Street Bridge and makes artworks from materials she finds there, particularly ball-point pens and discarded makeup. Visit San Angel this month to make some extraordinary holiday purchases, or just to gather inspiration and have a chat with Hank and Leigh Anne. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun-Sat. 110 Blue Star, (210) 226-6688, sanangelfolkart.com.
