Vega

Release Date: 2009-03-04

Austin’s Vega, the latest project from former Ghosthustler frontman Alan Palomo, got some internet love last summer for the single “All Too Vivid,” and with good reason. It’s just the sort of instantly likeable ’80s throwback track amateur music critics love to passionately champion before savagely mocking it once it becomes too well-known. Vega’s managed to avoid that infamous blogger backlash for two reasons. First, as even a single listen to “All Too Vivid” will tell you, Palomo’s got his shit down cold. From the layered keyboard demos and echoing digitized drum rolls to the bombastic feathered-hair vocals about finding love in the city, it’s as if the theme songs to all those Eddie Murphy buddy-cop movies inspired a semi-legitimate musical genre that’s been improving, if not evolving, for the past 25 years. And secondly, Vega has yet to get the sort of Vampire Weekend-level exposure and hype that so incites indie-geek snark. An upcoming SXSW appearance might well change that, but it probably explains why Vega’s playing a DJ gig at Saluté, where admission will be two freaking bucks. $2, 10pm Sat, March 7, Saluté International Bar, 2801 N. St. Mary’s, (210) 732-5307, saluteinternationalbar.com.
