Let’s get started with a reminder that general admission tickets are still available for Texas Monthly’s BBQ Fest this Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m. at the City Terrace of Austin’s Long Center. Locally, Jason Dady (Two Bros BBQ and B&D Ice House) along with Tim Rattray (The Granary ’Cue & Brew) will head up I-35 to represent Alamo City meats and such. Tickets are $80 a pop and can be purchased through tmbbq.com.
Canstruction, a design and build competition that uses canned goods, is on display at North Star Mall (7400 San Pedro) through September 21. Mall-goers can stop by on Saturday, September 13 at 3 p.m. for gourmet bites as prepared by San Antonio Food Bank chefs and staff, drop off canned good donations at the mall’s guest services office in the Saks Fifth Avenue Wing and take in the exhibit constructed with architects, engineers, contractors and students from Alamo Architects with Turner Construction; Barker & Associates; Ford, Powell & Carson Architects with Pugh Constructors and Cleary Zimmermann Engineers; HEB Design & Construction; Jaster-Quintanilla; Mdn Architects; OCO LPA Architects; Open Studio Architecture; Overland Partners; RVK Architects with Lundy & Franke Engineering and students from San Antonio College’s AIAS Chapter.
In more barbecue news, the Quarry Farmers & Ranchers Market will host a book signing of Barbecue Lover’s Texas with authors John Griffin and Bonnie Walker of SavorSA. Magnolia Pancake Haus (10333 Huebner) is saying farewell to summer with a five-course gourmet American BBQ with a Magnolia twist. The dinner is Saturday, September 27 at 6 p.m., but you have to make your reservation by Friday, September 19 at 10 a.m.
It’s that magical time of year when South Texas gets a taste for Oktoberfest (Lobo, Real Ale and Saint Arnold have already released their festival iterations). The first announced comes via The Hangar (8203 Broadway), which will host its beer and brats event Saturday, September 27 from 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Get ready to dive into countless German and local brews, dirndls are always encouraged.
On the wine side of things, Gruene Music & Wine Fest is also right around the corner. Open your schedule up for Thursday, October 9 through Sunday, October 12 for some good music and wine in Historic Gruene. Get those tickets lined up ASAP.
