Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-01-26

Gone is his mainstream success of the late ’80s and early ’90s, but Grammy-winning alternative country singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell is doing perhaps the best work of his long, illustrious career. On January 18 he released his memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks (Knopf), and this January 29 show will find him there by himself, just him and his guitar. The intimate setting is the perfect soundtrack for a candid book that opens yet another facet in the life of Johnny Cash’s former son-in-law. If you want to get a taste of this show, go to rodneycrowell.com and download for free three tracks off Rodney Crowell: Acoustic Trio Live, an album recorded with Will Kimbrough and Jenny Scheinman. All you have to do is sign up for his email list. The website also gives you the chance to buy the book by itself, or in conjunction with the digital CD, the latter option granting you access to a meet-and-greet with Crowell at Gruene Hall. In between songs, he will tell stories from the book. Be ready for a triple treat: moving stories, great guitar work, and dynamite songs. $25, 9pm, Gruene Hall, 1601 Hunter Road, New Braunfels, (830) 629-5077.
