Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-24

In its inaugural event, the Women & Girls Development Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation hosts the Women, Wisdom…Wine Poetry Slam and Luncheon with renowned Chilean-American writer Isabel Allende. The creative mind behind The House of the Spirits and Of Love and Shadows (both of which have been adapted for major motion pictures), Allende is often referred to as “the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author.” After Allende’s keynote speech, young women from the Boys & Girls Club Teen Center take the mic in a competitive poetry performance that will likely deliver on the community-oriented fund’s motto: “Empower. Encourage. Exceed.” $150 for individual tickets (tables of 10 also available), 11:30am, The Grand Hyatt, 600 E Market. For tickets, call (210) 228-3766 or visit saafdn.org.
