ARTS San Antonio Presents: The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-31

If you’re a person of sophisticated musical taste, you may want to place your backside on a well-upholstered seat before I tell you this: Yo-Yo Ma is in San Antonio. Go ahead and lay all the way back; I can see you feel a little dizzy. It gets better, too. You see, the celebrated French-born, Chinese-American cellist is not alone: He’s being joined by the Silk Road Ensemble, an international collective of musicians, composers, storytellers, visual artists, and arrangers from more than 20 countries, some of whom have been playing with the 16-time Grammy winner since 2000. The Ensemble has recorded four albums, ranging from traditional Chinese, Indian, and Persian sounds to contemporary Middle Eastern music. Yo-Yo Ma is expected to bring the collaboration closer to the West in a perfect blend of skill and passion. The night is presented in association with the San Antonio Chamber Music Society. Now go ahead and get up; check your silver tea service settings. Everything’s still there. Now promise to share the experience with someone you love. $45-$125, 7:30pm, Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, (210) 226-3333, majesticempire.com.
