Here's Why McAllen Whole Woman's Health May Stay Open Despite Abortion Ruling

A McAllen abortion clinic survived this round of Texas’ legal victory that effectively will close all but eight abortion clinics throughout the state.

A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that a 2013 law requiring abortion clinics to have hospital-like structural requirements and requires abortion doctors to have hospital-admitting privileges will stay in place.

The McAllen Whole Woman’s Health clinic will stay open because it is the only one south of San Antonio in, you know, that giant place called South Texas.

The court noted that women in the Rio Grande Valley would have to travel roughly 235 miles to San Antonio or farther in order to obtain an abortion, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The McAllen clinic, however, only remains exempt from the some state requirements, the federal appeals court mandated that all but one of their doctors must have hospital admitting privileges.

The McAllen Whole Women's Health blog responded to the courts decision, saying "it is a near-total loss... At this time we are still analyzing the decision to see if the relief granted to Whole Woman’s Health of McAllen will allow us to keep our doors open."
