Somewhere in Texas

The Pearl Brewery is about to get cool — like really cool. Our ‘lame’ mantra will fortunately not apply to the Pearl’s newest tenant — Jazz, TX. Set to open later this summer and located underground in the cellar of the newly restored Bottling House, Jazz, TX will be a music venue and bar.

At a recent preview, we got a taste (literally and figuratively) of what future patrons can expect. With a name like that, obviously live music will be the focus, but the genres will span beyond jazz, including salsa and swing music.

The creative force behind Jazz, TX, Doc Watkins, and his band will often be the stars of the show. Now nothing goes with live music quite like an amazing cocktail, and from what we tasted the bar program is going to be one of the best in the city. The “Ensemble” Old Fashioned featured muddled peaches, basil and brown sugar. The result was delicious — a cocktail that a dude would easily order and a whiskey-pussy like me would gladly drink.

We also tried the “Somewhere in South Texas” gimlet with vodka, lime and a Dr. Pepper reduction syrup, rimmed with cilantro and black lava salt. It was a cocktail that showed the creativity behind their drink menu, and one that goes down quickly enough that after a few you’ll find yourself very willingly on the dance floor.

On the food front where Lorenzo Morales will take the lead, the dishes could use some perfecting, but the idea behind them is solid. We tasted a brisket and foie taco, fried quail and house-made pickles and corn bread. The idea is elevated bar food with and emphasis on South Texas and Hill Country ingredients. Overall, our first introduction to Jazz, TX was very positive.

It will easily be one of San Antonio’s most unique venues, and we personally can’t wait to go drink too many gimlets and embarrass ourselves with our dancing skills.
