Several La Vernia Bears were arrested Thursday on charges of sexual assault
Police have arrested "several" student athletes at a South Texas high school on sexual assault charges following an alleged hazing incident.

Officials in La Vernia, about 30 miles east of San Antonio, put out a press release Thursday afternoon after reports started to circulate of students being arrested at La Vernia High School. According to police, investigators received "an outcry of hazing involving high school student athletes" several weeks ago. Police say that after some "forensic interviews" with students at the Child Alliance of South Texas, investigators determined "a crime had been committed."

According to the statement from the La Vernia Police Department, officers showed up at the high school Thursday to arrest "several juvenile students on the charge of sexual assault." Police haven't yet responded to our questions, and so far officials have yet to detail the charges against the students, who are now being processed in juvenile court.

In a message to parents on Thursday, La Vernia ISD Superintendent José Moreno said the initial complaint that ultimately triggered the charges was in reference to "High School Boys' Athletics," but he didn't name a particular team or sport. Moreno also said the district is fully cooperating with the police investigation and referred all questions to law enforcement.

"District is under strict guidelines and is not able to comment on the complaint at this time," Moreno said in his statement. "Rest assured that every precautionary measure has been taken to ensure that our students are supervised and safe."
