Doc Watkins Trio Plays 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'

Doc Watkins, an accomplished bandleader, gifted musician, and owner of SA’s swanky Jazz, TX venue has long been invested in supporting/championing the San Antonio music milieu. His venue, which is a sort of refined version of the old-town dancehalls and saloons that it is (at least in part) modeled upon, has hosted a slew of excellent shows, ranging from jazz, blues, big band, Texas swing, salsa, conjunto and Americana, in its year and a half of existence. This Wednesday, Watkins and company will present a special holiday performance, but not the bill of X-mas standards you might expect. The group will instead present the music of A Charlie Brown Christmas, the beloved TV special that first aired in 1965. The music, originally composed by accomplished jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi, is as off-beat as Charlie Brown himself and, at the time of its release, was just one more way in which the seminal Peanuts series challenged the entertainment orthodoxy. $20, 8:30-11:30pm, Jazz, TX, 312 Pearl Pkwy, Building 6, Suite 6001, (210) 332-9386, jazztx.com. – James Courtney
