U.S. Marshals Shoot Unarmed Man After Chase Through Alamo Heights

An unarmed man was allegedly shot by U.S. Marshals three times after leading them on a chase through Alamo Heights on Monday morning, according to officials.

Doug Greene, spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, told the San Antonio Express-News that U.S. Marshals were attempting to arrest John Carlos Alvear. He was wanted on three felony warrants, including evading arrest. Police had encountered Alvear, 32, on Friday, but Greene said the man had fled.

With warrants also including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault a family member, SAPD asked for assistance from U.S. Marshals on Monday morning, according to the Express-News. A special task force tracked Alvear to a hotel on Austin Highway around 9:30 a.m. According to KSAT, Alvear got into his car when he saw officials and led them on a brief chase through Alamo Heights. Greene told the news station that Alvear even rammed his car into one of the officers' cars. The chase ended after Alvear crashed his car at the front yard of a home on Chevy Chase Drive, according to KSAT.

Greene told the Express-News that Alvear appeared to be reaching for something, so three Marshals opened fire on the suspect. The spokesman said the marshals "felt threatened" knowing Alvear's history and aggressive demeanor.

The Express-News reports that Alvear was taken to the hospital, where he is in critical condition, but stable. Greene said officers didn't find a gun in Alvear's possession and don't believe he fired at them.
