"A Collection of Unconnected Noises Made on a Single Subject"

Within San Antonio’s extensive roster of artist-run galleries, the focus is often smartly fixed on our wealth of local talent. As admirable and important as that may be, it’s also vital to consider outside perspectives and welcome otherness into the fold. Launched in March by San Antonio-based Houston native Benjamin McVey (who teaches painting, drawing and sculpture at UTSA and showed at Artpace earlier this year), the pop-up Anthem Gallery intentionally traffics in geographic variety and has so far showcased artists from Austin (Deborah Roberts), Fort Worth (David Willburn) and Brooklyn (Rachael Wren), as well as San Antonio’s own David Alcantar and Larry Graeber. For its September show, Anthem turns its walls over to David Bonagurio’s “A Collection of Unconnected Noises Made on a Single Subject.” Born in Houston and based in Utica, New York, Bonagurio addresses “personal and larger social issues which affect perspective and perception” through vaguely ominous figurative drawings and paintings rendered almost exclusively in black and white.
