New local food celeb: It may be time to add another royal head to the official Fiesta roster — a representative that shows we’re not only more culturally inclusive, but more species sensitive than this cow town gets credit for. This proposed queen even comes with her own sash: SA high-schooler Kelly Anderson, profiled last month in A-B, took the female crown in’s Cutest Vegetarian Alive contest. The Smithson Valley High senior, who eventually went vegan after completing a school project on animal cruelty, triumphed over more than 1,700 meat-free teens.

Texas on the menu: In January, the Texas Department of Agriculture added a restaurant initiative to its Go Texan certification program, which links dining establishments to produce and processed foods from the Lone Star state. Locally, Jason Dady’s Bin 555 and the Lodge have signed up, along with the Cove and locavore vanguard Texas Farm to Table. A-B hopes the program, which restaurants can join for a mere $25 per annum, will put more Texas wines on local lists (like that lightly tropical McPherson Viognier), too. Get more info on the program at, and look for the Go Texan logo at the grocery store and in restaurant windows.
