A few years ago, Chef Mike Behrend started eating vegetarian meals and exercising. In the process he dropped 100 pounds and now runs marathons and competes in triathlons. In 2006 he opened San Antonio’s only vegetarian restaurant (also certified kosher), repeat Best of San Antonio winner Green. Even for meat eaters, it’s a real treat and bargain.

Just north of downtown at 1017 N. Flores, Green serves breakfast from 9-11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and Sunday 9 a.m.-2p.m. Try the sweet-potato pancakes.  If you go on the first or third Sunday, take in the farmers’ market.

For lunch or dinner seat yourself, either in the high-ceiling dining rooms with photos of old San Antonio, or on the patio. My favorites: the eggplant parmesan over ziti in a marinara sauce, the portabello steak, and the zucchini enchiladas. Most entrees come with two sides. Try the fresh kale salad or sweet-potato fries. Entrees are $8.49, sandwiches (including a side) or large salads, $7.99. No alcoholic beverages, but a great rasberry ice tea.

The first Sunday of the month is opera night, with local soprano Edlyn de Oliveiera performing. The parking lot’s small, but ample free on-street parking is available on Flores. Handicap accessible.
