Armchair Cinephile

Sergio Leone Anthology
While plenty of old MGM DVDs are being reissued lately, this is one of the more substantial makeovers. Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” anchors a quartet of Spaghetti Westerns, all fleshed out with respectful bonus features, one of which (the outlandishly named, non-Eastwood Duck, You Sucker) hasn’t been available before in the US.

Martin & Lewis Collection Vol. 2 (Paramount): A quick follow-up to last year’s first installment finds the legendary comic Pardners setting their sights on Hollywood or Bust, where they’ll be Living it Up with Artists and Models. You’re Never Too Young to be charmed by the pair’s chemistry, though older cinephiles will likely be this set’s main audience.

Fantastic Voyage (Fox): One of those films that earns its place in the pop consciousness through a simple, enduring image, the kid-friendly sci-fi Voyage shrinks a troop of explorers down to microscopic size, then sends their vessel into a human body to contend with red blood cells and the like, as they attempt to save a colleague from a life-threatening blood clot.

Seinfeld: Season 8 (Sony): Self-explanatory, yes?

ANY EXCUSE IS A GOOD ONE: On the occasion of Norbit’s not-exactly-welcome DVD release, Paramount is reissuing Trading Places and Coming to America on both high-def formats (and standard DVD as well). For those of us who think Eddie Murphy’s Disney/drag/disguise years are a bust, this is a refreshing look back at his mid-’80s heyday — particularly Trading Places, which reminds us that Dan Aykroyd used to be funny, too.
