Armchair Cinephile

PICK OF THE WEEK: Just in time for the star-heavy remake, this 50-year-old Western rides in to show who’s boss. Glenn Ford owns the thing, oozing a cool, conflicted badness that Russell Crowe doesn’t match.

The web phenom continues unabated, with Homestar ‘toons now joining the five-disc-strong Strongbad Emails series. The latter’s our fave for a 10-minute pick-me-up after a tiring day.

It really is time for somebody to put out DVDs of Barney’s cult-favorite Cremaster series, which overflows with weird imagery and drips hip. No Restraint is no substitute, but a doc (co-starring Barney’s partner, Björk) about the creation of Barney’s latest masterpiece will have to do.

Sure, you could watch this for free on TV, but that would require knowing what channel Bravo is, then tracking down the rare times they’re not showing a moronic reality show about models or something. Why do that, when four of the best Actors Studio episodes (starring De Niro, Penn, Pacino and Crowe) are gathered in such a tidy package?

BUZZED-ABOUT TV: Friday Night Lights (Universal), Season one, did the impossible and made culture critics care about something to do with football; Heroes (Universal), Season one, actually threatens to make the comics world safe for non-geeks.
