Art opening: Engaged and Fragmented

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-11-18

The Southwest School of Art & Craft hosts a show of historical import and social justice starting Thursday: Several artists, with the cooperation of war veterans and activists, have recombined the fabric of military uniforms into usable art paper; swords into plowshares, you might say. Peter Sowiski, John Risseeuw, Eric Avery (right), Drew Cameron, and Drew Matott each use this post-military pulp to comment on the war experience while materially dismantling it. Prints, paintings, and silkscreens by the participating artists all make use of these veteran variables. Opening reception: 5:30-7:30pm Thursday, November 19. Through Jan 9, Southwest School of Art & Craft, Navarro Campus, 300 Augusta, (210) 224-1848, — Sarah Fisch
