News and notes from the san antonio art scene.

Performance, video, and installation artist Michael Smith will deliver a lecture on Thursday, May 22, at ArtPace. Smith's extensive body of work wavers between contemporary art and stand-up comedy. Since the late '70s, the New York City-based artist has successfully navigated the slippery terrain between modern art making and popular culture by invoking a doltish alter ego named "Mike," a luddite whose life

is dictated by the fickle whimsy of cultural consumerism. Smith is currently an assistant professor of studio art in the Transmedia Program at the University of Texas in Austin. This event is free and open to the public.

Sala Diaz unveiled the next phase in artist/curator Hills Snyder's Duplex Series on Friday, May 16. Montana-based painter Gordon McConnell and Wimberly art maker Bale Creek Allen form this month's unlikely duo. McConnell's vaguely cinematic oeuvre, Phantom Empire, and Allen's utilitarian objects make pleasantly strange bedfellows. Sala Diaz is located at 517 Stieren, and is open by appointment only. Blue Star Contemporary Art Space recently announced an open call for San Antonio area artists to participate in their first studio tour on October 4-5. The event kicks off with a party and auction the night of October 3, and a critics panel the following morning. Participating artists will be listed in a full-color, printed guidebook and map for a registration fee of $50 for Blue Star members or $75 for non-members (which includes a one-year artist membership). The tour will be free and open to the public. The deadline for registration is June 1. Registration forms are currently available at Blue Star. Request a form via e-mail, contact Oakley Allred at oakley@bluestarartspace.org or 227-6960. •
