News and notes from the San Antonio art scene

Following August's pregnant lull, September heralds the prospect of multiple acts of creative retribution. "Graphic Eloquence: Paintings" by Jeff Elrod and Steve Roden, curated by Francis Colpitt, Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at University of Texas at San Antonio, opens Thursday, September 4 at the UTSA Satellite Space at Blue Star. Elrod, a Houston native living in New York City, and Roden, from Los Angeles, represent bicoastal extremes in emerging contemporary painting. According to Colpitt, "Their abstract paintings privilege the wandering hand, guided by intuition yet limited by a self-imposed system or the filter of technology." Hmmm. Among upcoming FotoSeptiembre events, Three Walls presents new work by SA-based photographer Ansen Seale. "Flux and Flow," Seale's new series of experimental digital images, were captured with a camera of his own design, a device that allows for vastly extended exposures. Time also forms the thematic grounding of the series; specifically, its ambiguous relationship with the more tangible dimension of space. Seale's opening reception will be held on Friday, September 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibition runs through September 26. Three Walls is located in Studio 106D Blue Star, Building B. Local photographer Robert Maxham, known for his commercial and creative work, unveils "Proustian Dream: A Wall Book" at Blue Star on September 5. The exhibition visually interprets Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, a tale presented in a way that suggests the author fell asleep, allowing his restless imagination to fill in the remainder of his novel.

Puerto Rico born photographer Carlos Betancourt, Nigerian native Simon Norfolk, and Atlanta College of Art student Amanda Moon will also exhibit work at Blue Star for FotoSeptiembre. Like "Proustian Dream," Betancourt's new series of large-scale photographs, "Realm of Secrets," delves deep into the subconscious. His work appears in such prestigious collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

In contrast, "Baghdad Fragments" and "Afghanistan: Chronotopia" by artist and photojournalist Simon Norfolk, documents the brutally layered external landscape of wartorn Afghanistan and post Saddam Iraq. His photographs document the effects of decades of unending hostility enacted upon what was once the very cradle of civilization. "Afghanistan: Chronotopia" focuses on the barren Afghani landscape, scattered with the remnants of broken civilizations, while "Baghdad Fragments" depicts eerie scenes of personal possessions abandoned by Iraqi soldiers during the fall of Baghdad. Of these scenes, the artist states, "`These fragments` seem to add up to a tragic profile of the Iraqi soldier and his hopes and fears in the face of the coming onslaught. In addition they show the pitiless inequality between the two sides in this war - one army in air-conditioned tanks; the other in flip-flops."

Finally, Gallery Four features emerging artist Amanda Moon. The exhibition, "33n45, 84w23," is a series of photographs taken at that precise longitude and latitude, currently inhabited by an abandoned concrete factory. The artist attempts to engender this desolate setting with organic congruence, treating the factory as inseparable from the landscape at large. Moon splits her time between Atlanta and San Antonio.
