ARTIFACTS

News and notes from the San Antonio art scene

A slew of visual artist international residency programs have upcoming application deadlines. The Nordic Institute for Contemporary Arts is accepting applications for its 2004 Media Arts Residency Program, MEDIA AiR. The NIFCA has residencies available in Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland; Riga, Latvia; Bergen, Norway; Stockholm, Sweden; and St. Petersburg, Russia. For more information, go to www.nifca.org. The Kyoto Art Center in Japan is also accepting applications for its artist-in-residency program.

Program details are available online at www.kac.or.jp/english/residence/apdetail.html. For the less adventurous, the Visual Arts Residency Program at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska (www.bemiscenter.org) and the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York (www.vsw.org/artists/ artstsprogs.html) are also soliciting applications. Go forth and represent us well.

On the homefront, use this week to enjoy the tail end of FotoSeptiembre 2003. Several shows opened on Second Saturday, including Anastacia Bernal Uriegas' "You Almost Made Me Jump Out of My Skin" at ONE9ZERO6 Gallery. The 22-year-old's work communicates a stylistic maturity through playful, highly saturated images encased in sexy, white-on-white mattes and frames - a tribute, no doubt, to the fine work of the gallery's sister business, Benavides Frames. ONE9ZERO6 is located at 1906 S. Flores at Lone Star, across the street from Gallista Gallery. For more information, call 227-5718. •
