ARTIFACTS

Instead of taking a First Friday stroll, I opted for First Thursday (or as our design director calls it, Thurst Thursday — although the art walk has nothing to do with the definition of thurst, which is some kind of a coal-mining term), I was really pleased with the crowds that turned out for the opening reception for Blue Star’s three shows: Arte Latina: Roar, Goin’ Mobile, and new works by Kristy Perez. I enjoyed the work of Irma Carolina Rubio — she captured the stereotyped roles of Latina women in her photography, with one work featuring the following caption: La Ideal Wife, No Dice Nada. She Says Nothing. The exhibition is open until June 8, so you’ve got plenty of time to check it out.

Unit B director Kimberly Aubuchon curated Goin’ Mobile, and the seven artists presented in the exhibition demonstrate a wide variety of artistic taste — from Michele Monseau’s video installation to Min-Tse Chen’s drawings of never-ending paths. This traveling exhibition truly does take viewers around the world.

One show I have yet to check out (but will probably dedicate an upcoming Art Capades to) is Latin American Posters: Public Aesthetics and Mass Politics, over at the Museo Alameda. The exhibition is up until June 29.
