The justly celebrated Say Sí represents that rarest of all arts nonprofits: competent, accomplished, and fully coherent in its mission. Rather than padding résumés and preaching platitudes, Say Sí educates kids (age 14+) in the arts without dumbing either down, emphasizes artistic excellence as well as employment readiness, and fosters a community of forward-thinking youth and volunteers. Its biggest annual fundraiser, the Small Scale Work for a Larger Cause auction, is in its 12th year, and fully 100 percent of monies raised (sales-tax free!) will go to support this Southtown institution. The exhibit of smaller works by some big artists — including J’Nil Jackson, Marilyn Lanfear, Cesar Martinez, Kent Rush, and Say Sí director Jon Hinojosa — is already up in the hall, but the auction, which in addition to helping a worthy cause also shakes out as a terrific party, happens Friday night. $40 pre-sale, $50 at the door. 5:30-9 p.m., 1518 S. Alamo.
