April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

April is also National Poetry Month, duh. So suspend those Passover chores, Easter plans, Fiesta preparations, the yardwork, and your skeptical disbelief about that least remunerative of American letters - unless you consider hip-hop to be poetry, which we do - and eke out an evening or two for Poetry, dammit. Might we suggest, on April 1, SLAM THE TOWN: A participatory kick-off to National Poetry Month 2010, during which the following happens: 1. La gente are encouraged to write a poem, silly or serious, and slip it under a coworker’s door, under the windshield wiper of a stranger’s car, etc, and label it (see for deets), 2. our local poet laureate Naomi Shihab Nye will read at the School for Inquiry & Creativity ( at 9 a.m., and 3p.m. at the main library at 6:30p.m., noted poets Jesse Cardona, Vocab, and Jenny Browne will read from their work. On the 6th, Jazz Poets Society will perform guess-what at High Wire Arts from 6-9pm. On the 9th, there’s a Dance and Poetry performance (huh!) at 7:30 at Radius Arts. Poets performing will be Olga Davis, Grisel Acosta, Assef al-Jundi, and Jim LaVilla-Havelin ... feat. T-Pain. (J/K). Much, much more info to be found at - Sarah Fisch
