Film composer Elmer Bernstein once said, "There are 24 hours in a day and sometimes you use all 24 hours." Those words will ring true for a group of directors, playwrights, and actors as the San Antonio Theatre Coalition presents theatreASAP on Saturday, September 10 at Magik Theatre. `See In the Round, page 21, for more info.`
The full day will be utilized by "the talent" as the "24-hour theater-making event" celebrates its second year. Six directors and six playwrights will receive a San Antonio-related phrase, a prop, and a cast list (gender and age only) at 8 p.m. on September 9. Writers (who'll probably fill themselves with Red Bull) have until 6 a.m. the next morning to write six separate 10-minute plays based on their assignments. Two hours later (time for a quick power nap?), writers will meet their director and cast. Directors then have the next 12 hours to mold their raw material into a public performance. If the suspense of theatreASAP is too much to bear, soothe your work-ravaged soul at the Ivory Consort's "Music in the Land of Three Faiths: Music of Medieval Spain," which will feature songs in Hebrew, Ladino, Arabic, and Galatian-Portugese from the 10th-13th centuries, a rich period of musical diversity and cultural exchange.
