of the city's community, the Library is presenting its own Asian Film Festival, featuring four films from as many countries: China, Japan, India, and Vietnam. The first screening will be at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 6 in the Central Library auditorium on the first floor. The Library will be showing Zhang Yimou's To Live (Huozhe), starring veteran Chinese actor Gong Li, who has also starred in Yimou's films Raise the Red Lantern and The Story of Qiu Jui. To Live follows the Xu family through three decades, illustrating the struggles of a Chinese family into an era of controlled Communism.

In coming weeks, the Library will show Ozu Yasujiro's Tokyo Story (April 13), Satyajit Ray's The Stranger (April 27), and Tran Anh Hung's The Scent of Green Papaya (May 4). So what if you can rent these from Blockbuster? At least you won't have to squint to read the subtitles. •
