Although it’s not often you hear Latin trap on terrestrial radio due to its explicit content, you’ve almost certainly heard its biggest success story — Puerto Rican singer-rapper Bad Bunny, aka El Conejo Malo, on nearly a dozen hit singles in the past year alone. From providing the main hook to Farruko and Nicki Minaj’s “Krippy Kush,” to starring alongside J. Balvin and Cardi B in this summer’s mega-hit “I Like It” (both of which can be heard on English- and Spanish-language radio stations), Bad Bunny is among the most instantly recognizable voices in Latin pop music. Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, the 24-year-old star began his career uploading tracks to Soundcloud before gaining international success. In the span of a few years (he was bagging groceries as recently as 2016), Bad Bunny helped give prominence to the genre of Latin trap, largely through Internet outlets, and quickly garnered over four billion views on his own YouTube channel in 2017. Not only is Bad Bunny leading the way in music, he’s also quickly becoming a fashion icon, evidenced by the striking music video for “Báilame” with Venezuelan singer Nacho and fellow Puerto Rican singer Yandel. On Friday, Bad Bunny brings his first headlining tour, La Nueva Religion, to the Freeman Coliseum.
