Bang Bang Owners Team Up with Rocker Dogz Chef for New Restaurant

There's a restaurant on the way from Bang Bang Bar owners Jamie Hoppe and Jenn Alva, and they're bringing back a familiar fave. Get ready to meet The Dogfather.

Though known for their bulked up micheladas, bloody marys and taco Tuesdays, Bang Bang Bar still gets lots of asks for food.

"We looked into putting a food truck in and found how expensive they are," Hoppe said.

After trying to form a partnership with the owners of Roy's Taco Hut, Hoppe and Alva learned the owners wanted to focus on their Highway 90 location. After taking over the shop and buying the equipment in August, the pair contacted Kris Martinez of defunct Rocker Dogz.

"We've known Kris for a while and wanted him on board. We approached him a few weeks ago and he's in," Hoppe said.

Martinez, who most recently had manned the kitchen at Pugels, first opened his Rocker Dogz hot dog cart in 2011 at Pedicab off Cevallos. After Pedicab perished in a fire, Martinez's late-night dogs were a hit on and off the St. Mary's Strip with their toasty buns, and gourmet flavors like the Thai Rocker Dog (made with sweet chili glaze and Thai red cabbage slaw, and topped with cilantro-mint lime sesame vinaigrette) or the Bella Blue (made with a red wine reduction and bleu cheese sauce).

The menu will feature at least a handful of dogs, a mix of classics from Martinez and a few new ones, along with a build-your-own option with prices ranging from $5 to $10.

"We don't want to put ourselves in a box," Hoppe said. "The menu will change, we'll have a weekly dog feature some puro San Antonio stuff."

A TABC license is still pending, but the restaurant hopes to feature wine and beer to pair with your dog.

Though Hoppe wouldn't share a set opening date for The Dogfather just yet, she mentioned a December grand opening once the license is approved.
