A teapot. A candlestick. A golden dress. A red rose. These items will soon make their mark on The Playhouse’s stage. Unlike other fairy tales, where a prince’s love often rescues a princess, in Beauty and the Beast young Belle is the one with the power to lift the curse. Disney’s musical adaptation expands further upon the story, establishing Belle as an intelligent young woman whose stubbornness rivals the Beast’s, and giving life to other cursed occupants of the castle, who are absent from the original tale. In fact, it’s Lumiere’s “Be Our Guest” and Mrs. Pott’s “Beauty and the Beast” that come to mind as two pinnacle moments in the musical. The Playhouse’s production is directed by David Nanny and stars Carlye Gossen as Belle and Jeff Jeffers as the Beast.
