A little more than a year on the job, Mayor Ron Nirenberg shows he still has a way with Current readers. Maybe it's his dedication to creating a more inclusive city, one that's open to people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. Maybe it's his focus on building more affordable housing, finding remedies for the ill effects of gentrification and developing a real transportation system for San Antonio. Maybe it's all those public proclamations of love for his wife Erika Prosper. Whatever it is, he easily took the top spot in our poll. "I am grateful to the Current's readers for the support," Nirenberg said. "Let's do this again next year. Viva San Antonio." The former District 8 councilman electrified San Antonio progressives in the 2017 runoff election, clobbering then-Mayor Ivy Taylor, who'd said at a public forum that poverty stemmed from "broken people" who didn't have a good relationship with God. Our next city election is in 2019, and we know there's at least one councilman itching to take on the mayor. Time'll tell if Nirenberg hangs on for a repeat "Best Of."
