Voter turnout in Bexar County for election day on Tuesday was the lowest its been in at least 23 years. Only 3.68 percent of the nearly 1.05 million registered voters actually cast their ballots.
It's normal for turnout to be lower in years that doesn't decide the fate of statewide or national races (many of us are still recovering from 2016). But this year was the first that voter turnout was below 4 percent since 1994, when the county first began collecting data.
According to elections administrator Jacque Callanen, that number doesn't include military ballots, which are counted later. Still, she told mySA.com that it's unlikely that the total number will exceed the 4.18 percent turnout in 2001, the current lowest turnout.
While the number of registered voters has increased since the county started collecting data, the number of voters actually casting their ballots has remained about the same. Bexar County wasn't alone though. Only 5.77 percent of all registered voters in Texas made it to the voting booth.
Locally, residents who did vote approved all seven amendments proposed on Tuesday. These included a property tax break for spouses of first responders killed on the job, new term limit for gubernatorial appointees and changes to home equity loans.
