Zimmern tips his hat to the good food and people of San Anto
The San Antonio episode of
Bizarre Foods, "Brains, Balls and Blood," premiered Monday on the Travel Channel. Famed TV chef and gourmand Andrew Zimmern sampled some of the Alamo City's best calf balls, crickets and quail eggs (to name a few).
The episode featured not only local hot spots and established restaurants such as
Restaurant Gwendolyn (152 E. Pecan St.) and
El Machito (7300 Jones Maltsberger Road), but also a trip to
Diamond H Ranch (1598 Highland Dr.) in Bandera where tiny quail are raised. Zimmern sampled one of their succulent, raw quail eggs, garnished with hot sauce of course. They're not savages.
Mixtli Culinaria (5251 McCullough Ave.) and its 16-course boxcar dinner left the biggest impression on the wayward cowboy, saying the restaurant was, "Awesome, one of the better restaurants I've been to in a long time." Zimmern praised the chefs' traditional Mexican core of their food and their sustainable business practices.
Watch below Zimmern's top five favorite people he met on his tour that exemplify and re-imagine Tex-Mex and S.A. food culture. A repeat of the episode will also broadcast at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 21 on the
Travel Channel.
