With an impressive list of credits that includes performances at SXSW, Bonnaroo, the U.S. Open and the Superbowl, Black Violin can no longer claim to be “the biggest independent group that no one has ever heard of.” Formed by violist/vocalist Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste and violinist Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester and named after violin legend Stuff Smith’s final album, the Florida-based duo creates a unique hybrid of hip-hop, rock, R&B, bluegrass and classical music. Addressing their surprising versatility, The New York Times wrote, “Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orchestral soloists; at others they fiddle as if at a hoedown; at still others they strum the violin and viola like guitars.” With three albums to their credit — a self-titled 2007 debut, 2012’s Classically Trained and 2015’s Stereotypes — Baptiste and Sylvester have have also emerged as in-demand collaborators, working either together or independently with the likes of Alicia Keys, P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith and Aretha Franklin. In addition to playing 200 shows per year with their support band, Black Violin performs at schools, encouraging kids to think creatively and stressing the importance of arts education.
