"Blue Is Not a Color"

From its earliest appearances on Egyptian ceramics, statues and tombs circa 2200 B.C. to the accidental discoveries of Prussian blue (1706) and YInMn blue (2009), the color blue boasts a rich history of inspiring creations that reach beyond the ocean and sky. Spanish master Pablo Picasso spent four years creating monochromatic paintings during his famous Blue Period; and French disruptor Yves Klein developed and trademarked his own intense shade of ultramarine, International Klein Blue. Noting that “one color can be interpreted in vastly different ways” and that blue specifically is “an almost universally favored color with the ability to instill trust, inspire creativity and even lower heart rates,” Ruiz-Healy Art zeroes in on a single hue with “Blue Is Not a Color,” a summer exhibition uniting four members of the RHA roster with four guest artists. Combining prints, sculptures, textiles, paintings, photographs and mixed-media works, the group show highlights the talents of San Antonio-based artists Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Ricky Armendariz, Jesse Amado, Andrea Reyes, Cade Bradshaw and Deliasofia Zacarias as well as Cecilia Biagini (who was born in Buenos Aires but lives in Brooklyn) and Cecilia Paredes (a Peruvian who divides her time between Lima and Philadelphia).
