Most people wouldn’t eat at a restaurant or do take out every day. It’s cost prohibitive, harder to control whatever thing the latest diet says you should count, and the dishes at home would feel underappreciated.

But that’s just what most beer drinkers do on a regular basis. They drink their beer in bars or grab a six-pack at the supermarket so that a credit card and a bottle opener are the only tools needed.

Two San Antonio homebrew clubs are setting out to change that next weekend.

On November 6, members of the Bexar Brewers and the San Antonio Cerveceros will hold Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day events at two locations. The American Homebrewers Association, which started the project in 1999, officially changed the name to Learn to Homebrew Day last year, but in San Antonio, even decade-old traditions die hard.

The Bexar Brewers will have experienced practitioners of zymurgy on hand in the bier garden area outside Blue Star Brewing Co. (1414 S. Alamo) overlooking the San Antonio River. Club president Markus Haas says they will be brewing on several setups so visitors or curious passersby can get a feel for different styles and brewing equipment.

The Cerveceros will be set up in Northeast San Antonio at Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling, the city’s newest microbrewery (4834 Whirlwind Drive).

There will be free samples of commercial beers and homebrews to make trying out the craft seem less like a task and more an adventure in cooking and chemistry. They kick off at 9 a.m. and stay until the job gets done. There also will be cool beer stuff to give away.

Both events are open to anyone 21 years or older and no RSVP is required.

Beer dinner: Speaking of Ranger Creek, the brewery is presenting four beers at a special beer dinner at Brasserie Pavil ( on November 2. The six-course menu includes spiced pumpkin soup with a vodka crème fraiche paired with Ranger Creek Black Saison brewed especially for the dinner.

Oatmeal Pale Ale teams with the salad; the Belgian dark La Bestia Aimable with braised short rib and smoked, stuffed quail; and the Mesquite Smoked Port with chocolate donuts with black Hawaiian sea salt and Kahlua cream. Tickets are $49 and by reservation only.

A toast to the dead: Freetail Brewing Co. will have its annual draft release of much-admired La Muerta starting November 1. A limited bottle release of the imperial stout memorial to the Day of the Dead is November 6.•
