If Donald Trump ends up not having to be interviewed by Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's attorneys, as they have requested, let's hope he at least talks to
Serial's
Sarah Koenig.
The
San Antonio Express-News reported over the weekend that Army Lt. Col. Franklin Rosenblatt, Bergdahl's attorney, sent a letter to Trump seeking a meeting to determine whether to depose the Republican presidential prospect or call him as a witness during Bergdahl's court-martial.
Defense attorney Eugene Fidell has alleged the bombastic New Yorker's statements about his client might result in an unfair trial because of publicity.
Bergdahl, now a subject of the popular podcast
Serial, is on trial for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, which, if convicted, could put the man away for life.
Trump has called Bergdahl a traitor and says he
should be executed.
The Army sergeant walked away from his post in 2009. In 2014, he was rescued during a prisoner exchange with the Taliban ordered by President Barack Obama, which was heavily criticized. Ensuing media coverage revealed Bergdahl planned to run to another base, triggering a man hunt, so that he could complain about problems he saw with leadership in his unit in Afghanistan.
