Boxcar Satan: 15th Anniversary Show w. Chapstick

  • courtesy
Release Date: 2008-04-02

Time flies when you’re in the bowels of Hades. How else to explain the fact that Boxcar Satan, SA’s best (only?) purveyors of savage, demon-chasing, avant-garde punk-blues, are celebrating their 15th birthday this week?

Over their lengthy career, Boxcar Satan has honored the spirit of both Captain Beefheart’s eccentric blues and the New York no-wave movement of the late ’70s and early ’80s, which drew on free-jazz concepts and provided inspiration for many post-punk bands. With little fanfare, but with a consistent commitment to their vision, Boxcar Satan has released seven albums, two singles, and a DVD collection.

Sanford Allen’s musical brainchild will throw an off-kilter quinceañera for itself at Limelight on April 5, with sets from three different BS lineups, and appearances from at least nine of the 14 members who’ve toiled in the band since Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. Don’t look for “Stumpy Joe” Childs or
Ronnie Pudding, but expect to see “Gentle Ken” Robinson and “Mikey Jam” James pounding the skins.

Best of all, as with any Boxcar Satan show, you can always count on Allen’s howl-into-the-void vocals and feral guitar attack. 10pm Sat, Apr 5, $5, Limelight, 2718 N. St. Mary’s, (210) 735-7775.
