CHISME Y CHICLE

RUMOR: We heard that visionary hotelier Liz Lambert has purchased the Havana River Walk Inn, but a company rep says they’re only going through “feasibility.” Having set new hipster-hotel standards with Austin’s San Jose and Marfa’s Thunderbird (with the help of SA’s own Lake Flato), we can only wonder what might happen to the distinctly European-colonial Havana. Mayor Castro wants to make SA more cosmo (a war of attrition every SA Mayor seems destined to wage). Though Lambert’s Midas touch might not draw more dental-hygienist conventions, it would guarantee buzz. What of Club Cohiba and Cool Café’s future? Stay tuned…

FACT: Speaking of old buildings and drinking establishments, the late-’60s Pusi Kat Club is attempting some form of reunion on June 30 and July 1. The Yardbirds played there, Jimi Hendrix partied there, Doug Sahm probably drank Pearl there. Augie Meyers and other local rock luminaries will be roasted. See page 35 for details.

FACT: Professor Jennifer Mathews of Trinity Universtiy will read at the Twig from her fun new book about the history of gum. Who knew our old nemesis Santa Anna brought chicle to America? See page 35 for details on this one, too.
